Flights to Calabria lift the lid on one of Italy’s most under-wraps regions. Whoever’s job it was to keep Calabria a secret deserves a pat on the back. Covering the whole of Italy’s toe, this place is defined by tourist-free towns, villages and beaches. Speaking of the latter, it certainly does the so-called Beautiful Country justice with its 500-mile coastline. It’s got some of the nation’s best stretches under its wings – picture ivory-white sands, backed by rugged, landmark-topped cliffs. The towns they belong to are just as scenic, too. Tropea is Calabria’s very own Sorrento, with a clifftop town full of traditional trattorias and charming squares. Meanwhile, Pizzo’s a jumble of mustard-yellow houses and narrow lanes, which shelve down to a talc-coloured sandy sweep. If you steer away from the gleaming shores, you’ll still have plenty to fill your day. There are national parks, Norman ruins and the Apennine Mountains – to name just a few.
