Book a direct flight to Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, and Mayan ruins, palm-lined beaches and a lively night scene are all on your doorstep. Flights from a London airport take around 10 hours to Cancun, which is like a holiday playground for grown-ups. You can expect swish international hotels, beach parties and top-notch nightclubs. By day, you can shop your way through the designer boutiques, and pick up deals on cheap and cheerful keepsakes from the open-air flea markets. If you’d rather work on your tan, travel further south to trendy Playa del Carmen. It has a long strip of powder-soft sand, and you can see plenty of wildlife under the waves at Akumal Beach. Just off the coast, there are a couple of postcard-worthy islands, including Isla Mujeres. Here, you can scuba dive past underwater sculptures and get acquainted with the local sea turtles – loggerheads, hawksbills and green turtles all call this part of the world home. There’s more to Mexico than its beach and party scene, too – one of the world’s most fascinating historic sites can be found here. Chichen Itza, a colossal Mayan city, is a huge draw for visitors. It dates back to the 3rd century, and the highlight is El Castillo – a pyramid-like temple with a stairway up each side. Lesser-known, but just as impressive, is Tulum. It’s an ancient clifftop city with a huge, sea-facing castle.
