About Florida
Flights to Florida set you on a course for adventure. The Sunshine State clocks up big-hitting theme parks by the bucketload, like Universal Orlando® Resort, SeaWorld® Orlando and Busch Gardens® Tampa Bay. And that’s without mentioning Walt Disney World Resort – Orlando’s magical piece de resistance. Themed hotels gather around the parks, and there’s a whole crop of well-placed options on International Drive, as well. Away from Florida’s rip-roaring rides and supersized cartoon characters, there’s an impressive beach scene to consider. The wildlife-filled Ocala National Forest is just north of the city. Head west, and you’ll be able to make the most of the golden sands of Clearwater and the balmy shores of St Pete Beach. These seaside spots are less than two hours’ drive from Orlando, and offer some of the best sunbathing holidays around. On the east coast, the Kennedy Space Center is an easy-to-reach attraction if you’re based in Orlando, and pretty Cocoa Beach is close by, too. In the south, you can pay a visit to leafy Fort Myers, dubbed Florida’s ‘City of Palms’. Keep venturing this way, and you can get your fill of scuba and seafood at the Keys – a little chain of islands floating off Florida’s southern tip. Just make sure you save some time for Latin-spliced Miami. It’s just north of the Keys, and the sprawling city streets, Art Deco architecture and trendy night scene are the perfect up-tempo alternative to the beach. You can travel to an airport that’s close to the action, Orlando Sanford International, direct from London Gatwick.
Fast Facts
- Escape to the shores of Caladesi Island State Park, near Clearwater. You can only get there by ferry from the mainland, so it comes with plenty of peace and quiet.
- Splash the cash in the Mall at Millenia, Florida’s designer shopping haven. Tick off the likes of Chanel, Cartier and Dior, then make for department store giants like Macy’s.
- Follow the golden arches to Orlando’s International Drive – home to the biggest McDonald’s in the world. This is Florida so it’d be silly not to supersize.
- Sip a dirty Martini in Sky 60, Orlando’s only rooftop bar. It’s an upscale affair so the sweeping city views come with VIP cabanas and international DJs.
- Take one giant leap – to NASA’s HQ, the Kennedy Space Centre. With huge rockets, G-Force simulators and real-life astronauts, it’s a theme park in itself. You’ll find it in Cape Canaveral, east of Orlando.
