Xcaret, Mexico

Holidays to Mexico are about as diverse as they come. Boasting a rich Mayan history and plenty of ancient ruins, Mexico is also home to some of the most lively beaches in the Caribbean. Add in a coastline filled with luxurious purpose-built resorts, and you've got everything you need.

Mayan history

The Mayan people, who lived in southeast Mexico, were known for being highly advanced in all areas of maths, science, art, and communication. For anyone with an interest in historical civilisations, a visit to the Yucatan Peninsula is a must. The El Castillo temple in Chichen Itza is perhaps the most famous attraction. However, just an hour and a half's drive to the west brings you to Mayapan, where you can see more than 4000 structural ruins.

Caribbean beach life

Mexico’s Caribbean coast is the best place for laidback beach holidays. The seaside activities such as swimming and watersports begin in Cancun, which offers 22 kilometres of soft sand. This is considered to be Mexico’s party hotspot, with beach bars dotted all the way along the coast, and luxurious resorts overlooking the Nichupte lagoon. Further down the coast are quieter destinations with more secluded beaches. Try Playacar for sophisticated villas and exclusive golfing. Just so you know, the beaches on this stretch of coastline sometimes experience increased levels of seaweed – called sargassum. It’s influenced by the weather and ocean currents. If your hotel’s affected, the staff will do everything they can to clear it.

Pacific coast action

For those looking for more action and adventure, Mexico’s Pacific coast is the place to be. Puerto Vallarta is ideally situated in the valley below the Sierra Madre mountains, offering easy access to the numerous outdoor activities here. Treetop canopy tours and zipline rides provide a unique birds-eye view of western Mexico, with great views over Banderas Bay. Alternatively, the Garza Blanca preserve offers family-friendly hiking paths.
