Prepare for total relaxation on holidays to St Peter. Its interior's made up of national parks and nature reserves, while the coast's peppered with palm-trimmed beaches.
A big part of Barbados’ so-called Platinum Coast runs through St Peter. As such, the parish’s coast is like a reflection of the sky, with light-blue waters and cloud-white sands. There’s more beyond the shore, though, like Jacobean mansions, a wildlife reserve and bustling Speightstown.
Mullins is the most popular patch of sand in the parish. It gets the green light from sunbathers, as well as watersports fans. There’s a beach bar for the cocktail-in-hand types, too. Further north, Heywoods Beach is the introvert in these parts. It’s an uncrowded stretch, and colourful fish flit around the shallows. Plus, you can stroll into nearby Speightstown for lunch and a spot of shopping.
While St Peter’s beaches are typically Caribbean, the parish also has some quintessentially British bits. Its Georgian-style church looks like it’s been lifted out of a Home Counties hamlet, and St Nicholas Abbey is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. Alternatively, pop into the roadside markets and shops of Little Bristol, otherwise known as Speightstown.
