Lakeside beaches and culture-packed neighbourhoods are both on the agenda on city breaks to Toronto.
Toronto – Canada’s largest city and capital of the Ontario province – sits along Lake Ontario’s northwest shore. It’s got plenty of strings to its bow, certifying it as one of Canada’s city break hotspots. You’ll get a real taste for the country’s mixed bag of culture here, with each of its districts showing off a distinctive style. Throw in a string of beaches, lofty sights and a location that lands you within easy driving distance to Niagara Falls and you’ve just about covered this city’s credentials.
A collection of waterside skyscraper’s stack up on Toronto’s skyline, with the biggest of the bunch – the CN Tower – reaching lofty heights of more than 550 metres. If you’re feeling brave, you can climb to the top of the tower and stroll around its glass-floored observation deck for an aerial shot of the city – on a clear day you can see for more than 100 miles. It’s even got a rotating restaurant – it completes a circuit every 70 minutes, so you’ll get a shot of all corners of the compass while you’re tucking into dinner.
More than half of the city’s population were born outside of Canada, which means there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to culture here. From neighbourhood to neighbourhood, you could be fooled into thinking you’ve stepping into another city. Greektown’s a great example, where tavernas and pastry places line the map, open-air markets and Asian restaurants cover things in Chinatown, while cutesy trattorias line Little Italy’s streets.
Thanks to its lakeside location, there’s no shortage of beach options on city breaks here. Toronto Island Park – a 15-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto – is made up of a medley of beach-edged islands. The namesake spot on Centre Island is one of the most popular picks, with plenty of space for picnics and shallow waters suited to families. For something a little less crowded, drop the anchor on Ward Island – this place’s beach tends to see fewer footprints from tourists.
