Holidays to Nice ferry you to the French Riviera, where pebble beaches run back-to-back with stylish streets.
With a short flight time and lots of sunshine, Nice has got the goods when it comes to city breaks. That’s not all it’s got up its sleeve though – most of its major sights are huddled close together, and when they’re not, the city’s super-efficient tram service make exploring easy work. When it comes to plotting your stay, pull up Place Massena on the map and check the distance from your hotel – it’s the square in the centre of town, so the hotels nearby are on the money for central stays.
You’ll find Nice’s old town – AKA Vieux Nice – at one end of the Promenade des Anglais. It’s home to a crisscross of streets that wind their way around the town and meet up at cobblestone squares. Pastel-painted buildings line the walkways here, and it’s also home to the city’s main market – Cours Saleya. The stalls start up with fruit and flowers first thing, then you’ve got a series of street-food spots to explore after midday.
Beyond its beaches, one of Nice’s next-best credentials is its art scene. Big names like Picasso, Matisse and Chagall have all left their mark on this city. The latter’s even got his own self-designed museum, where you can get a look at 12 of his most famous paintings, showing scenes from the Old Testament. For something a little more up-to-date, try out the Museum of Modern Art which houses pieces dating from the 1950s to the current day.
