Malia is the place for no-holds-barred nightlife — the clubs on Malia Beach Road don’t stop till dawn. For something lively, but quite as full on, try Hersonissos. You can start the night in the bars around Beach Road and then wander over to the foam-filled clubs on Agias Paraskevis Street.

Waterpark adventures

Crete packs in enough waterparks to satisfy the most committed of thrill seekers. White-knuckle fans should head to Watercity in Anapolis, with its Kamikaze slide and fast-paced Cyclone. If you’re after something a little tamer, the family-friendly Aquaplus waterpark near Hersonissos fits the bill.

Beach hopping around Chania

Spend your days in Chania, and you’ll discover 10 kilometres of white sand just a five-minute walk away from the city walls. The Blue Flag beauty at Platanias, meanwhile, serves up water-skiing and kite surfing, along with pedalos.

Venetian old towns

Whitewashed houses on winding streets, colourful shutters, stone steps and arched doorways — the old town in Rethymnon serves up a chilled-out slice of traditional Greece. Make sure to check out the fairy light-strung Venetian harbour.
