View All DealsYou're veering off the beaten track with holidays to Agios Ioannis Peristeron. It's a relaxed beauty spot that's light on crowds, but heavy on local life.
Agios Ioannis Peristeron has both feet planted in the quietly-does-it camp. Nuzzling in to Corfu’s south-east corner, it’s not really a resort, more a low-key huddle of hotels, tavernas and bars dozing in the Mediterranean sun. It’s all set at the foot of olive grove-covered hills that slope up from the coastal road. Hushed coves and inlets pepper the coastline all around.
Agios Ioannis Peristeron Beach waves a Blue Flag, with a slim corridor of pebbles and dark sand gently shelving in to the shallow sea. It’s well-organised, too. Wooden walkways make it easy to stroll the length of the beach and down to the water’s edge, and there’s a good choice of watersports. And for all its dormouse tendencies, a troop of tavernas and snack bars lend the place a touch of the cosmopolitan.
Agios Ioannis Peristeron likes to keep away from the limelight, but that’s not to say there isn’t plenty to do in the neighbourhood. It’s possible to take boat trips to the quiet beaches and coves along Corfu’s east side. For water-based fun of a different kind, Aqualand waterpark is 30 minutes’ drive away. It’s crammed with hold-on-to-your-hat slides and a massive wave pool, as well as calmer areas and a lazy river for little ones.
When you’re ready for shops and culture, Agios Ioannis Peristeron’s neighbour, Moraitika, is stacked with a parade of bars and shops that wends along the coast for more than a kilometre. The island’s capital, Corfu Town, is also on standby, 15 kilometres away. Watched over by 2 ancient fortresses, the threadlike streets of the Venetian-influenced old city hide an armada of museums and palaces. The Esplanade, or Spianada, is the main square in the newer part of the city, and the place to hear local musicians play at the bandstand while people-watching.
