The Ionian Islands lie just off the west coast of mainland Greece, and have been popular with visitors for many centuries. Each island is unique, but they all offer natural beauty, extensive beaches and traditional Greek towns.
Sometimes called the Emerald Isle because of its greenery, Corfu has always been a travellers' favourite. The Durrell family found a slower pace of life here, and the UNESCO-listed Old Corfu Town is well worth the trip. You can choose your pace, from quiet seaside resorts like Acharavi, right up to the energetic nightlife at Kavos. If you like history, you can see everything from ancient Greek archaeology to a French palace, with lots of solid fortifications around Corfu Town.
Kefalonia is known to many as the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, but it's also famous for its attractive harbours and beaches. Many of them are reached by winding down through forested hillsides, passing vineyards and olive groves. Skala is the most popular beach resort for its nightlife, while you won't want to miss the sunsets from the long sandy beach at Lassi. Lunch on the harbour at Fiskardo is also a visual treat.
Zante is smaller than the other islands, but is packed with sandy beaches and many varied resorts. You can choose a quiet spot such as Alykanas for relaxation, Tsilivi for family fun, and Laganas beach for the nightlife and nearby environmental protection areas.
