Holidays to Zakynthos Town offer ancient history, great Greek food, and pristine beaches all at once. Here you can explore great museums, kick back on the beach, and enjoy Greek cuisine in a classic taverna.
As Zante’s capital, Zakynthos Town is one of the island’s biggest cities. The town boasts a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from, but its character is pretty laidback. Elsewhere on the island you'll find the energetic party vibe that Zante is known for. Here, the focus is on relaxing, kicking back with a cocktail, and getting a taste for Greek culture. Zakynthos town is rich in history, and boasts a great collection of museums, orthodox churches, and ancient castles throughout its narrow streets.
Zante is known for its picturesque beaches, and you’ll find no shortage of pristine coastline here. Although the shoreline around Zakynthos Town is on the pebbly side, the sunloungers, parasols, and clear waters make for a great beachside experience. And if you do find yourself fancying a sandier spot, Argassi Beach is only a 10-minute drive away. It offers all the beachside amenities you could need for a day sunbathing on the white-gold sands.
Like many Greek destinations, Zakynthos Town boasts a long and rich history. Rebuilt after an earthquake in 1953, many of the town’s relics have been expertly recovered and restored. The Museum of Byzantine Art hosts a great collection of ancient artworks recovered from the ruins, alongside historical artefacts dating back to the 16th century. Alternatively, Bohali Castle sits on top of a nearby hill. Once the town’s main defence against pirates, the ruins are a great place to explore some local history, and enjoy great views over the bay.
