Rich in nature

Holidays to Val di Fassa promise plenty of natural beauty thanks to the rural landscape. Visit alpine huts in the Dolomite Mountains, a UNESCO-protected site with multiple peaks and plateaus. There's a wide range of walking trails in the valley, and getting out and about on foot is the best way to see the area. There's a dedicated walking path that travels all the way from Vigo di Fassa, to the south, past Val di Fassa and all the way up to Campestrin in the north. The walk takes just over one hour in total.

A feast for the senses

This is a top destination for mountain lovers and hikers because of the many trails in the area. There are seven villages of Fassa, all linked by scenic walking paths. Lots of the valley’s walking routes date back to ancient times and include historical points of interest. You can take the Moena sas da Ciamp path to see multiple churches and a traditional Ladin house-turned-café.

Traditions and myths

The Ladin people’s culture is still upheld in Val di Fassa. You’ll find lots of restaurants and cafés serving traditional Ladin cuisine, such as canederli dumplings and Graukase cheese. The region is also well known for its mythology, with some believing that a traitorous ruler was once turned to stone. You can learn about Val di Fassa’s rich traditions at the Fassa Ladin Museum in Vigo, a 10-minute drive or 35-minute walk from Val.

The setting sun turning the mountain peaks a rosy pink is such a famous sight that the locals have a name for it: 'enrosadira'. It’s also known as alpenglow. Sit back with a drink and watch the colours slowly change.

For a meal with a mountain vibe, Canazei’s ideal. At most of the mountain eateries, there'll be classics like schnitzel and stew on the menu.

Getting about

Buses

Bus line 101 runs between all the villages in Val di Fassa. There's a regular service throughout the day.

Summer lifts

There are 35 cable cars, gondolas and chairlifts spread along the valley. Sit back and enjoy the views.

On foot

The villages in Val di Fassa tend to have cobbled squares and wood-framed buildings. You can explore a village or walk from one to the other, using the network of walking paths.

Walking

Canazei circuit

Starting next to the playground in Canazei, this 5.6km route follows the river out of the village, before taking a short loop through some woodland nearby. Benches and tables are dotted the whole way along.

Val Duron and the Fassa ridge

Take the road from Campitello signposted Passo Duron then follow gravel tracks up into Val Duron itself. At the head of the valley, you can call in at the Rifugio Duron mountain hut for a bite to eat.

Sassolungo circuit

Full-day hikes don’t come much better than the 17km loop around the mighty Sassolungo mountain group, with huts to stop at along the way. Take the Col Rodella cable car from Campitello to reach the route.
