If you dream of an island paradise, chances are, you're picturing the shores of Mauritius. White sandy shores, blue-green seas and jungle-clad mountains provide the scenery for holidays to Flic en Flac.
Set on the western coast of Mauritius, Flic en Flac is home to one of the best beaches in the country. The long tracts of soft white sand lead to warm, blue-green water. Luxury hotels have gathered here over the years to take advantage of this prime stretch of coastline, but that doesn’t mean Flic en Flac lacks personality. Traditional restaurants and local shops keep things distinctly Mauritian.
One of the first things you’ll learn about Mauritius is its reputation as a diving haven. Flic en Flac has a lagoon protected by the reef underneath the waves, and a series of mountains above it. As a result, this is one of the island’s premier dive sites, and the tropical marine life you can see here is staggering. Dive highlights include Rempart Serpent – or Snake Reef – and the Cathedral, a fantastic underwater cave.
Go on a day-trip to Le Morne, only 45 minutes away by car. This rugged mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its cultural significance. It was used as a shelter for runaway slaves, and is part of a moving chapter in the island’s history.
Beyond the charms of the coast, you’ll find plenty to see. There's the fascinating Medine Sugar Estate, 15 minutes' drive from Flic en Flac. You can go on guided tours to learn about the sugar-cutting season and the distillery. Golfers will be happy too. A 10-minute drive will see you warming up your swing on the Tamarina Golf Estate, which nestles between the mountains and the ocean.
