Almeria is in the Andalucia region of southeast Spain, and the city is full of palm-fringed plazas, handsome churches and museums. The pick of the cultural spots is Museo de Almeria, which showcases the area’s history and culture. Elsewhere, you can walk in the footsteps of filmstars – during the 1960s and 70s, Almeria’s Tabernas Desert became a popular destination for Hollywood wild west flicks, and you can take tours of the actual movie sets. After a day of exploring, head to Paseo de Almeria – a bustling street in the middle of the city – for a much-needed pit stop. This street stretches from the coast, inland to the main tourist attractions, with other small roads branching off to markets and hidden squares. And it’s full to the brim with shops, cafés and restaurants.

Ancient Alcazaba

The Alcazabar is a must-see when in Almeria. This fortress was built more than a thousand years ago by the Moors to protect the city from invaders, and it’s still standing tall today. There are three different walls surrounding the fortress, each with its own set of gates and towers. Inside you’ll find gardens, fountains and courtyards, as well as the ruins of a mosque and a castle. Make sure you climb to the top of the Alcazaba, where you’ll be able to see across the entire city.
