A historic hidden gem

Capdepera is a bit like a tapas board – there’s a little bit of everything in this historic village, which lies slightly inland of the popular resort of Cala Ratjada. An ancient hilltop castle built in the 1300s and a whitewashed lighthouse perched right on Majorca’s most eastern point offer a taste of the island’s history. And the crafts shops and tiny bars hidden down quiet stone streets give a flavour of the laidback local culture.

Markets and Mediterranean munch

Day to day, it’s pretty quiet here. The most crowds you’ll see will be at the weekly market, where you can shop for everything from fresh fruit and veg to a new holiday outfit, or seated al fresco at one of the restaurants in the town centre. They dish up traditional Spanish dishes like tomatoey gazpacho and seafood paella, alongside jugs of fruit-filled sangria.

From calas to caves

If you’re searching for that toes-in-the-sand feeling while you’re away, you’ve only got to drive 10 minutes to the ‘calas’ – or bays – along the coast. Or, drive 30 minutes to Llevant Natural Park and hike to secluded swimming coves where you can spot Mediterranean tortoises. A day trip to the Caves of Drach is worth adding to your itinerary, too. This place is home to some of Europe’s biggest caves that go 25 metres underground, plus it’s filled with stalactites and stalagmites that glow in the dim light.
