On Amadores holidays, you're handed a laidback, family-friendly Blue Flag beach, with a bonus sister resort just down the road.
Amadores hangs on the southern belly of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. This place was made to order in 2002, when officials created a crescent-shaped beach from crushed coral. And it’s been custom-built with families in mind. Peace and quiet reigns supreme on the sands, thanks to a ban on loud music and motorised watersports. What’s more, buzzing Puerto Rico is just a short, scenic stroll away.
Lotion-white sands and clear, sky-blue waters – that’s Amadores Beach in a nutshell. Translated, it means ‘Lovers’ Beach’, but it’s a favourite with families, too. The bay’s protected by breakwaters, which means the waters are pond-calm, plus an inflatable obstacle course bobs offshore. Grown-ups, meanwhile, can relax on daybeds, beanbags and hammocks at the chic Amadores Beach Club.
A string of souvenir shops and restaurants fall in line behind the sands. And Amadores’ hotels crown the craggy cliffs a bit further back. If you’re after more of a party, you’ll find that in neighbouring Puerto Rico. A scenic clifftop path connects the two resorts, taking around 20 minutes. They may just be a cove away, but these two are poles apart. Puerto Rico caters to the loud crowd with malls, pubs, clubs and arcades.
