Best for beaches

Guardamar del Segura’s in one of the Costa Blanca’s quieter spots, but it isn’t lacking when it comes to holiday prowess. The town’s filled with traditional and international restaurants, and there’s a huge street market selling crafts and clothes once a week. The pièce de résistance, though, is its huge sandy beach. It’s a big draw for sun-worshippers, and counts itself among the best in the region.

Explorer’s base

Getting to grips with the Costa Blanca couldn’t be easier. Guardamar del Segura’s sandwiched between a couple of the region’s premier tourist towns – Alicante and Torrevieja – so you’ll never be short of things to do. Benidorm’s just a little further north, if you want a taste of the neon nightlife, and historic Cartagena anchors the lot in the south. The area's crown jewel, Valencia, is within daytripping distance, too.

Natural beauty

From natural parks to natural wonders, this pocket of Spain’s south-east coast is filled with not-so-little surprises. Top of the pile is the bright pink saltwater lake at Torrevieja, which has a layer of medicinal mud beneath the surface. Closer to the centre, you can wander through the forest of pine and eucalyptus trees in Alfonso Park, or take a boat trip to the protected marine sanctuary that surrounds the island of Tabarca.
