About Madeira

Its nickname, the ‘floating garden’, gives you a big hint as to what’s in store when you step off a flight to Madeira. This little island packs a horticultural punch, thanks to tropical plants, colourful blooms and thick forests. But this place is more than just a gardener’s dream. Backed by mountains, and facing out to sea, Funchal – the island’s capital – covers both land and sea. Check out the panoramic views as you ride the cable car up to the mountainside village of Monte. Or, take advantage of the city’s seaside position and hop on a boat at the marina. Travel to Santana for a taste of traditional Madeira. You’ll find pint-sized, blue-and-white decorated casinhas dotted around the village. Their thatched roofs reach all the way to the ground, giving these little 16th-century houses their distinctive triangular shape. If it’s natural sights you’re looking for, Madeira has you covered. As well as being an international golfing destination, Santo Da Serra’s mountain-top position makes it an ideal spot for hikers. The same goes for Canical, except this fishing village deals in coastal paths along dramatic cliffs instead of hilly trails. You won’t find many huge sandy stretches in Maderia, as beaches here take the form of little rocky coves or purpose-built lidos. However, pocket-sized Calheta took matters into its own hands and ordered in tonnes of Saharan sand. Its manmade beach has earned itself Blue Flag status. We fly direct to Madeira airport from six airports across England, so you’ve got your pick of holiday gateways to the floating garden. Check our website for offers on cheap flights and hotels.

Fast Facts

  • Head for Prainha in the Ponta de Sao Lourenco area. It’s a lovely sheltered cove of black, volcanic sand with parasols and sunbeds. Plus, it’s one of the few sandy swathes on the island.
  • Hit the island’s biggest mall, Madeira Shopping, in Santa Quiteria. It’s got 83 stores, 20 restaurants, and seven cinema screens.
  • Snack on huge slices of ‘bolo de mel’ – honey and molasses cake. Tradition states that the cake is broken by hand, never with a knife.
  • Splash some cash at the Pestana Park Resort Hotel. Its casino has seven roulette wheels and 200-odd slot machines. There’s a nightclub, as well.
  • Wander around the Madeira Botanical Gardens. Set in over 80,000 square metres, its home to bird of paradise flowers, rare orchids and dragon trees.
