When you book flights to Phuket, it’s impossible not to focus on the beaches. Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, with 90 miles of coastline to go around. And there’s no one-size-fits-all rule along the shore. On Kamala Beach, the only energy you’ll need is to flip the pages of your book as you sunbathe, while Patong’s stretch is lively enough to rival the country’s famous capital, Bangkok. Phuket has an underwater scene that’s big with the snorkelling crowd, too – Coral Island, off the south coast, is hemmed by a reef that’s teeming with kaleidoscopic fish. Holidays here wouldn’t be complete without a spot of haggling, and Phuket Town’s one of the best places to hone your technique. Antique shops and souvenir stalls clamour for your business, and on Yaowarat Road, you can tuck into tasty local food or have suits personally tailored.
