City breaks to Athens will have you ticking off ancient ruins, designer shopping and rooftop cocktails all in an afternoon.
History buffs – Athens is calling. With landmarks dating back more than 3,400 years, the Greek capital is like an open-air museum, except you’ll need at least a few days to tick off all the sights here. Jazz bars, swanky boutiques and modern art galleries bring the city bang up to date, though. And if you fancy pairing a morning of sightseeing with an afternoon of sunbathing, a 20-minute taxi ride is all that stands between you and the balmy beaches of the Athens Riviera.
Think of Athens, and the Acropolis is probably the first thing that pops into your head. There’s a reason this UNESCO-stamped treasure appears at the top of everyone’s must-see list – it dates all the way back to the fifth century BC, but is as well preserved as some monuments half its age. Once you’re done snapping photos in front of the Parthenon’s grand pillars, head down the hillside to the Acropolis Museum, where you can check out unearthed artefacts beneath a glass floor.
Not every part of Athens will have you feeling like you just stepped out of a time machine. In fact, the buzzy bars of the Psiri neighbourhood are so on-trend that you’d never believe us if we told you that you were sipping cocktails in one of the oldest parts of the city. Add boutique shops, artisan cafés and bold street art into the mix, and you’ve got a pretty good picture of what modern-day Athens is like.
