A village of two halves

Google Koskinou, and you’ll see the side of Greece that’s on all the postcards. Think whitewashed buildings, bright blue shutters and pretty flowers tumbling down from hanging baskets. They’re an ideal place to snap your holiday pics, before strolling the cobbled streets until you reach a little taverna for souvlaki. But wander to the older part of this hilltop village, and you’ll stumble upon a cluster of buildings like the Traditional House – a little museum that gives an insight to traditional Rhodian living. There’s a 13th-century castle offering views over the local marina that’s not far away, too.

Bring on the beach

While Koskinou isn’t on the coast, it’s so close to sandy shores that beach days can slot nicely into your holiday itinerary. Your nearest one’s just a five-minute drive away, and offers waist-deep waters and plenty of space to lay back and top up your tan. Kalithea, which translates to ‘beautiful view’ in Greek, is a must-do daytrip, too. It’s a popular sunbathing destination, with a string of Blue Flag beaches to its name. The main one is peppered with shady patches, thanks to lots of leafy pine trees.

On the road to Rhodes Town

Fancy joining the tourists for a day or two? Rhodes Town is one of Koskinou’s most famous neighbours, and it’s less than a 20-minute taxi ride away. Head there to walk UNESCO-listed city walls that date back to the Byzantine era, and step inside the Palace of the Grand Master. It was built in the seventh century, and still has the mosaics to show for it. Look out for the Head of Medusa, too, if you’re into Greek mythology.
