Fly direct from Dublin to Gran Canaria for relaxing sun-drenched holidays in Maspalomas. This large tourist town has one of the best beaches on the island, amusement parks and waterparks for the family, and lively nightlife spots. And with over 300 days of sunshine every year, it's a great place to escape the winter blues.
Maspalomas beach is one of Gran Canaria's most beautiful beaches. It's over two kilometres long, with soft sand and a calm blue sea. You also get stunning views of the mountains and the undulating sand dunes. Families should head to the lighthouse section of the beach. It has a kid's play area and free toilet and baby changing facilities. Plus, if you walk too far towards Playa De Ingle, you might stray onto the nudist beaches.
To meet some of the more unusual locals, take a boat tour from Puerto Rico Harbour. It's a 25-minute drive from Maspalomas, although most tours include a minibus pick up service. Once out on the sea, look out for whales, flying fish, and green turtles. And if you're really lucky, a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins might come and say hello. Tours last two to three hours and include on-board snacks and soft drinks.
Following a major renovation in 2019, Holiday World became one of Maspalomas' top attractions. Holiday World is a huge entertainment centre right in the middle of town, complete with its very own amusement park. It has a giant rollercoaster, slingshot bungee rides, and a Ferris wheel offering a more sedate bird's eye view of Maspalomas. And there are 30 other rides and attractions suitable for all ages. The amusement park is open from 5pm to 11pm on weekdays and 12pm to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.
