The purpose-built resort of Playa de las Americas is on the southwest coast of Tenerife. The area is largely known for its clubbing and nightlife scene, but its selection of sandy beaches and year-round sunshine have also kept it popular. In addition, you’ll find duty-free shopping, tapas restaurants, the great Siam waterpark, and the glamorous Los Cristianos resort nearby. Six sandy beaches

Playa de las Americas has plenty of choice when it comes to beaches – there are no fewer than six to explore. Perhaps the best thing about the area is that all beaches are within walking distance, though you can catch the mini-train between them. All are great spots for watersports such as scuba diving and jet-skiing. The main beach is a great family hangout – the water is calm and suitable for paddling, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants to keep you fed and hydrated. If you’re a seasoned surfer or windsurfer, however, hit the waves at Playa de Guincho.

A visit to Mount Teide

Half an hour from Playa de las Americas is the stunning Teide National Park. Among its attractions is one of the tallest volcanoes in the world. To reach the 3700-metre summit, you can either hike the trails, or take a cable car. Whichever you decide, you’ll be pleased you made the trip once you’ve seen the views from the top. This excursion is a great choice if you want a day away from the beaches and bars. It gives you a chance to see a different part of this varied island.
