About Canary Islands
These volcanic Spanish isles have been making waves in the travel world since the Seventies. Now, they’ve got holidays down to a fine art. Flights to the Canary Islands will land you closer to Africa than Spain, which means year-round sun is the norm. The archipelago’s heavyweights are Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Each of them boasts sparkling shorelines, lively resorts and family-friendly activities on tap. Take Tenerife’s Playa de las Americas – it’s got a good helping of sandy beaches, duty-free shops and a waterpark. It’s not all man-made attractions, though – there are tons of natural wonders, too. In Tenerife, you’ve got the world’s third-biggest volcano, Mount Teide, while Lanzarote has Timanfaya National Park, and Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas Natural Park is home to some super-big sand dunes. Then there are the sleepy islands, La Palma and La Gomera. Neither of them has been given the mass tourism treatment, yet. So, expect unblemished beaches, traditional hamlets and rugged walking trails.
