Holidays to Italy are hassle-free with direct flights from Dublin. What will you choose? Outdoor adventure in the Dolomites, lakeside relaxation in Como, a culture stop in fairy tale Verona, or the famous canals of Venice?
Italy has many lakes, but there are three in particular that draw travellers from all over the world. Up in northern Italy, you’ll find Lake Como, Lake Garda, and Lake Maggiore, which all have their own feel. The towns on the Lake Como shores are chic and sophisticated, and a favourite of the A-listers, while Lake Garda’s mountain backdrop is very camera friendly. Lake Maggiore shares its shores with both Italy and Switzerland, with hints of alpine scenery.
Italy’s standout shape has earned it the nickname ‘The Boot’. Campania is the gateway to Italy’s boot, and boasts some of the country’s most historically important attractions. Pompeii offers the opportunity to see Italian history preserved forever under a blanket of ash, following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. And while not quite as famous, the city of Herculaneum is also very well preserved.
From a base in Campania, it’s easy to visit the Italian islands. Naples to Palermo is one of the busiest ferry routes in Italy, with 21 sailings per week to the island of Sicily. Here, you can take in the ornate cathedrals and basilicas. The Naples to Cagliari ferry route transports you to the island of Sardinia, where you can stroll around the old harbours and marvel at the medieval castles.
